Don't Look Away: Outright Window Takeover at SPACE

Join us for our SPACE Gallery Window Takeover for Pride: June 9-16th!

Don't Look Away honors the legacy of LGBTQ+ youth organizing by highlighting historic examples of direct action artwork, combined with pieces by Outright members who use arts-based community organizing to connect with each other across systems while working towards justice and liberation. From Stonewall to ACT UP, from the streets of Portland to the backrooms of Long Creek Youth Development Center, queer and trans young people on the frontlines of struggle, have always been the heart of Pride. We are building the world we know is possible—one moment of care, one act of resistance, one installation at a time.

2018 Prom Chaperone Training

The 2018 Outright Prom is an event celebrating LGBTQ+ and GNC youth in Maine. Every year adult allies (folks ages 25+) make this event possible by volunteering to "chaperone" the evening. Chaperones help maintain a safe and fun atmosphere from the coat check, to the photo-booth, to the dance floor. All 2018 Prom Chaperones must attend this training to volunteer. For info about the prom or chaperoning contact portlandoutright@gmail.com.

Making It: Zines, Movement, & Struggle | Zine Fair and Artist Talk at Long Creek Youth Development Center

Making It: Zines, Movement, & Struggle is a collection of 30+ all-original zines created by Portland Outright artist/organizers inside Long Creek Youth Development Center in the Winter '17-'18. These powerful pieces combine illustration, poetry, collage, and personal narrative, engaging readers with the daily realities of youth incarceration in Maine while offering a window into dreams, desires, and vision of these bold, young artists and leaders. Join us for this special opportunity to view the work where it was created and to hear from from artists themselves.

RSVP required by April 23, 2018 with first and last name, middle initial and date of birth. If you are an approved LCYDC volunteer, staff or visitor, no RSVP necessary. Space is limited, email portlandoutright@gmail.com to reserve your place.

Community Mentors are volunteers, age 25 and older, who support Portland Outright’s community programming and the young leaders who make up the membership of our organization. In this training we'll cover:

  • an overview of Outright, our work and community programming
  • Outright's model for youth organizing, transformative mentorship, and youth leadership development
  • an intro to the practices and skills we use to make our work possible (peer-support, harm-reduction, de-escalation, etc)
  • our principles and values for youth/adult partnership in youth-led organizing

This training is by invitation-only. To learn more about volunteering for this role, as well as others, please visit the volunteer section of this site.
