SAFE GROUP at Long Creek Youth Development Center

SAFE Group is a team of LGBTQ+, gender space nonconforming, and allied young people organizing inside Long Creek Youth Development Center for their dignity and rights while incarcerated. This youth-driven initiative includes one-to-one mentorship, weekly programming, and collective action.

The goal of this work is to transcend the walls of the prison by creating a network of young people and adults who are committed to challenging prison conditions and incarceration itself. We are doing this by:

  • lifting up youth solidarity--the ways young people across identity and cultural lines take care of each other--as a vital tool for survival behind bars and for the larger context of our movement
  • advocating for the rights of LGBTQ+, gender variant, and gender non-conforming people surviving inside Maine’s youth prisons by shifting culture and policies
  • building a larger movement led by formerly/incarcerated young people to end the criminalization of queer/trans communities in Maine.
